Is space exploration too costly or does knowledge of the universe and Earth outweigh the cost?

Is Space Exploration too Costly?     Since the beginning of the space era, it has been argued that the money spent on space exploration should rather be used on meeting the needs of the underprivileged and developing nations.   Martin Luther King once stated in one of his famous speeches  “if our nation can spend thirty-five billion dollars a year to fight an unjust, evil war in Vietnam, and twenty billion dollars to put a man on the moon, it can spend billions of dollars to put God’s children on their own two feet right here on earth”.   People like Martin Luther King may not have been opposed to exploring space, however, was debating about our priorities here on Earth.  Some people strongly believe that space exploration is important beyond just curiosity, but for our self preservation and the future of the earth.   The debate still exists –  Is space research/exploration worth pursuing when money is so badly needed in many places here on earth or is space research/exploration necessary for the future of the earth and all of the people living on it?     Your Task:   Part A: Space Agencies around the World   Using the list of space agencies on the following website: choose a country (other than Canada or the USA) who has a space agency.  Record the countries annual budget and research the space projects supported by the country.  Write a one page summarization of what you learned in your research.   Part B: Global Issues   Research the problems/issues people face (Environmental, Political, Health, Human, etc) within your country. Write a one page summarization of these issues.   Part C: Your Argument   Now that you have an understanding of the projects supported by your space agency, as well as some of the problems and issues that the people of your country face, answer the following question in a 5 paragraph essay:   Is space exploration too costly or does knowledge  of the universe and Earth outweigh the cost?   Part D: Class Debate (December Assessment Period)   The class will take part in a brief debate and discussion about the question at hand.  Each class member will represent their country and will have one minute to present their argument.  You will be marked on participation, understanding your view points, and supporting your argument.   Part E: Reflection Piece   After the debate, write a one paragraph refection on your currents thoughts and feelings about the question at hand.  Did your opinion change?
