discuss the matter with someone from a different culture to learn about his or her impressions and ideas.
Choose one or two theories that guide practice that appeal to you. Consider issues such as what the theory suggests goals for clients should be. What do the theorists envision as evidence of a mentally healthy personality and what do they consider problematic? How would they define success in treatment from a theoretical perspective? To what facets of a client’s life should a therapist attend most (i.e., thoughts, feelings, intrapsychic processes)? Given a client’s distress, how would the theorist explain their struggles? Consider how these theories may or may not consider cultural explanations for a client’s distress and to what degree. How do the goals for therapists practicing the theory include or discount cultural variables? If possible, after thinking about this for yourself, discuss the matter with someone from a different culture to learn about his or her impressions and ideas.
